Live Scan FAQs

1. Who needs Live Scan Fingerprinting?
More and more  industries are requiring Live Scan checks for their employees and stores; Security Guards, Teachers, Realtors, Notaries, CPAs, Lottery Retailers, Stock Brokers, Contractors, Nurses/Doctors/Hospitals, EMTs, Attorneys, Caregivers for children and elderly, Gaming, Insurance, Pilots, Pharmacists, Volunteers, Dental Assistants, and many more.

2. Do I need to make an appointment for Live Scan?
You can make an appointment, no appointment is needed, just come in. We have fingerprint rollers available  during our normal business hours Monday through Saturday from 8:30am to 6:30pm Mon-Fri and 9:00am to 5:00pm on Saturdays.

3. Do I need to do a Live Scan again if I have already done it before?
Yes. The DOJ does not share your information with other agencies. In fact, it is against the law for different agencies to share confidential fingerprint results with each other.  This means that you must submit a new application each time a criminal history is requested of you.

4. How long does it take to process the fingerprints and send results?
We submit your fingerprints while you are still in the store and the DOJ have them in approximately one hour.  In most cases, the DOJ responds to requests within 72 hours. The results are typically sent electronically to the requesting agency mail code listed on the Live Scan Service Form.

5. How may I check the status of my Live Scan fingerprints?
The requesting agency must contact the DOJ directly for results.  The DOJ requests inquiries to be made no sooner than 30 days after the initial Live Scan was submitted.

6.Where do I get a request for Live Scan service form?
The agency requesting the background check will provide you with the live scan forms necessary to complete the Live Scan. These forms contain information that is unique to each agency and is needed before arriving to have your prints taken. However, if you have misplaced your live scan form you may call the entity requiring your Live Scan to have a copy faxed to our office at 949.831.5340 or attempt to obtain a copy at the DOJ website at http://oag.ca.gov/fingerprints/security

7. What happens if my fingerprints are rejected?
Sometimes, Fingerprints may be rejected for reasons beyond our control. The most common reasons are the applicant's fingerprints have characteristics that are difficult to capture in the live scan process. This would include items such as cuts, scars, calluses and extreme wear. If your fingerprints are rejected on this basis, and they were originally scanned by our store, we will re-scan your fingerprints free of charge.  The DOJ will send you a letter explaining the reason for rejection and will include your original ATI number.  This is the transaction number associated with your initial submission.  All ATI numbers are 10 digits long and contain 1 LETTER; 3 NUMBERS; 3 LETTERS and 3 NUMBERS.  Just bring in your letter with a new Live Scan Request Form.

8. Can I request a criminal history background check for myself?
Yes.  You have the right to request a copy of your own criminal history record from the DOJ to review the information for accuracy and completeness. The California Department of Justice only accepts Live Scan fingerprints for personal record review checks. You may go to their website at http://oag.ca.gov/fingerprints/security for directions on how to obtain your information.  Criminal history background checks from the FBI may be conducted using ink-rolled fingerprints on paper cards.  Refer to their website at http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/background-checks for more information.

9. Do you do ink-rolled fingerprints?
Yes.  We are certified rollers in the State of California and have supplies to roll your prints with ink.
